Atmospheres of (counter)terrorism in European Cities

Dates: 2020 - 2024

This project explores the felt and emotional dimensions of contemporary terrorist threats and counter-terrorism measures as they manifest themselves in the ordinary experience of people living in European cities.
The project's interest in the sensitive dimension and intangible aspects of these threats and the responses associated with them in cities leads to different ways of asking questions about urban security and counter-terrorism: for example, by questioning the ways in which security and security infrastructures are felt, rather than just their modes of appearance or meaning.

Risques – Évacuations – Résilience (RER)

Dates: 2021 - 2024

In the wake of the floods in the Ile-de-France region and against a backdrop of environmental change, this project aims to remove the obstacles to taking account of people, their behaviour, mobility, needs and representations in understanding the vulnerability and resilience of a major metropolis. This interdisciplinary project is based on methodological cross-fertilisation and interactive feedback. A survey aims to map representations and ‘predict’ behaviour by territory and demographic profile. It opens onto a multi-agent simulation of crises, to anticipate spontaneous departures or refusals to evacuate by territory and socio-demographic profile, congestion, and the timing and conditions of return. The project will lead to a better characterisation of risks, vulnerability and resilience, and an assessment of the effectiveness of risk management and adaptation strategies with local stakeholders.

The project is being led by the PLACES laboratory, under the scientific direction of Samuel Rufat.

Establishment of qualitative indicators to measure the civic footprint of theatres in their territories

As part of the discussions on the next objectives and resources contracts, the Scène nationale de l'Essonne Agora-Desnos in Evry and the MC93 in Bobigny have decided to launch a study into the introduction of innovative evaluation methods. To do this, the two theatres have developed a partnership with the MRTE Geography Laboratory at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (now PLACES at CY Cergy Paris Université), with researchers in social geography whose work examines the links between cultural venues and their social and spatial environment. The researchers are working with the two organisations over a three-year period to develop approaches and tools that will enable them to ‘measure the civic footprint of each theatre on its territory’.

Bridging the gap between risk perceptions and preparedness and adaptation behaviour (BRIP)

This ANR MSREI project supports the consolidation of a European research network on risk representations and adaptation behaviours to climate change. It is at the origin of the Risk Perception Survey of Surveyors (Risk-SoS) network, with a European survey and a monthly webinar in 2020 involving 142 researchers from 28 countries.
This contract led to the submission of Horizon Europe projects CL3-2021-DRS-01: Escalator and ERC-2021-COG-SH7: Filling the Behavioral Gap in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.

DécaFmob (Decarbonising Mobility in France)

Dates: 2017 - 2020

At a time of climate urgency, this research looks at the transition that needs to be made, using the example of mobility, which is responsible for 30% of national emissions and the least obvious way of reversing the carbon trajectory. So what climate policies are we dealing with? How are the public, private and civil society players involved in public policy tackling the objective of reducing the carbon footprint of transport? A cross-analysis of the media and a survey at local, national and European level will enable a critical investigation of the discourse, tools and actions undertaken to reduce, avoid or transform the most emissive forms of mobility. Project carried out in partnership with the Forum Vies Mobiles.
